Questions about starting karate

The things people ask most before their first class. If yours isn't here, send us a message.

Do I need any experience to start karate?

No. Most people who join have never trained in a martial art. Beginners are shown each technique step by step and train alongside more experienced students.

Where are your karate classes in Christchurch?

Classes are held in the hall at Waimairi School, 1 Tillman Avenue, Strowan, Christchurch 8052. It is close to Papanui, Merivale, Bryndwr, Fendalton and St Albans.

When are classes held?

Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm for kids and 6:00 to 7:00 pm for adults, and Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 pm for adults.

What should I wear to my first class?

Loose, comfortable clothes such as a T-shirt and track pants. Karate is practised barefoot. You do not need a karate uniform (gi) until you decide to keep training.

How much do classes cost?

Send us a message on Facebook or call 022 657 3058 and we will send you the current fees.

What ages do you teach?

We run a kids class and classes for adults of any age. Message us with your child's age and we will tell you whether the kids class will suit them. Older teenagers usually train with the adults.

Am I too old or too unfit to start karate?

No. Karate is trained at your own pace, and fitness and flexibility improve as you go. Adults start in their thirties, forties, fifties and later.

What style of karate do you teach?

Shotokan, taught to the Japan Karate Association syllabus. Tomyris Karatedo is a Japan Karate Association New Zealand dojo.

Is there sparring, and will I get hit?

Beginners do not free spar. Partner work starts with pre-arranged drills where both people know the attack in advance, and techniques are controlled and stopped short of contact.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

For most people training twice a week it takes several years, commonly four to six. It depends on how regularly you train and how well you practise.

How do gradings work?

You grade when the instructor judges you are ready. Each grading tests basics (kihon), kata and partner work (kumite) for your level. Black belt gradings are held through JKA New Zealand.

Do students compete?

Students who want to can enter JKA New Zealand championships in kata and kumite. Competing is optional.

I trained at another club. Can I join?

Yes. Grades from Japan Karate Association dojos carry over. If you trained in another organisation or style, message us and the instructor will advise where you fit.
