Tomyris Karatedo

About Tomyris Karatedo

A small, traditional Shotokan dojo in Strowan, Christchurch, affiliated to Japan Karate Association New Zealand.

The dojo

Tomyris Karatedo teaches Shotokan karate the way the Japan Karate Association teaches it: strong basics, kata and controlled sparring, practised with care.

We train in the hall at Waimairi School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Kids and adults are welcome, from first-night beginners to black belts.

Sensei Liviu Nicolaie

Sensei Liviu Nicolaie, 3rd Dan (Sandan), instructor at Tomyris Karatedo

Liviu Nicolaie is the dojo's instructor. He holds a 3rd Dan (Sandan) black belt and is listed as an instructor by Japan Karate Association New Zealand.

Our affiliation

JKA NZ is the New Zealand member organisation of the Japan Karate Association, headquartered in Tokyo. Being a JKA dojo means three things for students:

  • The syllabus you learn is the same one taught in JKA dojos worldwide.
  • Your grades are recognised if you move city or country.
  • You can attend JKA NZ seminars, training camps and championships.

Competitions

Tomyris students take part in JKA NZ competitions in kata and kumite. Competing is a choice, and plenty of students train for years without entering one.
