Kids karate classes in Christchurch
A weekly Shotokan karate class for children at Waimairi School in Strowan. Kids learn real karate, step by step, in a calm and friendly class where beginners are welcome any week.
What kids learn
The class follows the Japan Karate Association syllabus, taught at a pace that suits children. Each lesson mixes short bursts of practice with games and drills that build the same skills.
- Kihon (basics). How to stand, punch, block and kick with balance.
- Kata. Set sequences of movement, starting with Heian Shodan, the first kata every Shotokan student learns.
- Kumite (partner work). Simple attack and defence drills with a partner, done at a safe distance.
- Dojo manners. Bowing in, listening the first time, taking turns and looking after training partners.
What parents usually notice
- Better focus. Karate asks children to stand still, watch, then copy exactly. That habit carries over to school.
- Coordination and balance. Stances, kicks and turns train both sides of the body evenly.
- Confidence. Kids perform in front of the class, earn each belt themselves, and learn that practice works.
- Respect. Courtesy is part of every lesson, towards the instructor and towards each other.
Karate also suits children who don't enjoy team sport. Nobody sits on the bench, and each child is measured against their own last effort, not against the others.
Is karate safe for children?
Yes. Shotokan partner work is controlled. Children practise set drills where both partners know what is coming, and techniques are stopped short of contact. From the first lesson, kids are taught that karate is never used to start a fight or to show off.
What age can kids start?
Children are ready once they can follow instructions and concentrate for a full class. That age is different for every child, so message us with your child's age and we'll tell you whether the kids class will suit them. Older teenagers are usually better placed in the adult beginners class.
What to bring to a first class
- A T-shirt and track pants or shorts they can move in.
- A water bottle.
- Bare feet. No shoes or socks on the training floor.
There's no need to buy a karate uniform (gi) straight away. Once your child decides to keep going, we'll help you order the right size.
Belts and gradings
Children grade through the coloured belts when the instructor judges they are ready. There is no fixed timetable and no pressure to grade. Kids who want to can also enter JKA NZ tournaments in kata and kumite. Competing is optional.
