Class times
Waimairi School, 1 Tillman Avenue, Strowan
Kids karate
Children. Focus, coordination and confidence, taught step by step in a friendly class. No experience needed.
Adult beginners
Adults of any age and fitness. Start from the first stance. Two evening classes a week, and you train at your own pace.
Advanced and grading
Coloured belts to black belt. Kata, kumite and grading preparation to the Japan Karate Association syllabus.
How to choose a class
If you have never done karate, or you trained years ago and are coming back, start with the kids or adult beginners class for your age. Everyone trains together, and the instructor sets work to suit your level.
If you already hold a grade in Shotokan from another club, bring your grading record to your first class. Grades from Japan Karate Association dojos transfer directly. If you trained in a different style, message us and we'll talk through where you would fit.
What you need for your first class
- Loose clothes you can move in, such as a T-shirt and track pants.
- A water bottle.
- Bare feet. We don't wear shoes or socks on the training floor.
You don't need a karate uniform (gi) straight away. Once you decide to keep training, we'll help you order one in the right size.
Come and try a class
Send us a message on Facebook and tell us who the class is for. We'll reply with what to bring and which night to come.
